Ask what equipment actually runs the job, not just what the shop owns
Many suppliers subcontract laser cutting, powder coating or welding to a partner shop while presenting it as in-house capability. Ask directly which processes happen on-site versus outsourced, since outsourced steps add a coordination point where quality control and lead time both get harder to verify.
Confirm how DFM issues get caught before cutting starts, not after
A supplier that starts cutting from a file without flagging hole-to-bend clearance, tolerance conflicts or finish incompatibilities is pushing the DFM risk onto the buyer. Ask for an example of a DFM comment they gave on a recent job, not just a claim that they "review every file."
Ask for a first article or inspection report before full batch, not after
A first article check on the first few parts of a run catches a dimensional or finish problem while it is still cheap to correct. A supplier that only offers inspection after the full batch is complete is shifting the cost of a defect from themselves to the buyer.
Check how a defect gets resolved, in writing, before it happens
Ask what happens if a batch fails inspection: rework, reship, credit or something else, and get the answer before placing an order rather than after a problem occurs. A supplier that cannot answer clearly is signaling that the resolution process is improvised, not standard.
| Input | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| In-house vs subcontracted process | Outsourced cutting, coating or welding adds a coordination point that is harder to verify from overseas. |
| DFM review evidence | A concrete example of past DFM feedback is a stronger signal than a general claim of reviewing every file. |
| First article inspection | Catching a defect on the first few parts is far cheaper than discovering it after a full batch ships. |
| Written defect resolution process | Knowing the rework, reship or credit policy before an order avoids a dispute after a problem occurs. |
